Great Hill is a great example of this, once home to about a dozen hiking trails such as the Great Hill summit trail, the Bracken trail, and the Fern Trail to name a few, today there are no official trails on Great Hill. To locate the start of the Great Hill summit trail, drive out of down town Bar Harbor along route 233 - The Eagle Lake road. Just before a large arched stone bridge, turn right into Acadia National Park. Now turn right onto the Park Loop Road, and drive just around the corner and park at the pull over with a sign about the seasons. Directly across the roadway is a granite ledge, to the left hand corner of that ledge is an area where you can make your way up on the ledge, look away from the road and toward the tree's, there is an opening and just beyond that flat granite which sloops upward. There really is only one way up you can go and as you make your way upward you will come to well worn spots along the way. Great Hill is a hill with twin summits, standing on summit one you can look across and see summit two. Also the views are completely different from each summit. From summit one where the trail on the map leads, you can sit at night and watch as planes land and take off in the distance from the Bar Harbor airport (located off island in Trenton).
