From 1955-61 Derek Clarke was the first to hold the post of Librarian in the University College of Rhodesia and Nyasaland where, with Dr Walter Adams as Principal [Adams would become Director of LSE] he had responsibility for the design of the library building and for the establishment of library services. He also spent 5 years as Librarian of the University of Liverpool. Derek began his career by winning an Open Classical Scholarship to Oriel College in 1939 and, after a break for war service, graduated in Literae Humaniores in1947. He left Oxford to become an assistant keeper in the British Museum Department of Printed Books and while there visited the United States as a Fulbright Fellow during 1950-51.
