As part of Indiana's I-69 Corridor Project, State Road 37 is being upgraded to interstate standards. The formerly median-divided, 4-lane highway also is having a third lane added in each direction where it passes through the city of Bloomington and up to Sample Road, about five miles north. Normally, a 60 foot grassy median separates an interstate's opposing travel lanes, but in the Bloomington urban zone, a concrete barrier wall [pictured] is being constructed instead. This allows Interstate 69 to fit within a right-of-way roughly similar to that of SR 37, thereby saving dozens of homes and businesses, which otherwise would have been subject to razing in an expanded right-of-way.
