Bix-by, and a handsome mahogany table is the gift ofthe founders of the club. IIG SAINT LOUIS The Saint Louis A\^omans Club was organizedin 1903, and now has a membership of two hun-dred and twenty-eight, containing the names ofsome of the most prominent women in Saint Louis.This Club leased the old Shapleigh home, at 3621Washington boulevard, which, furnished in richhangings, handsome furniture and beautiful, large,gilt framed mirrors, makes a delightful clubhouse. In the double parlors, the decorations are indark green, with mahogany furniture—the libraryand tea rooms being furnished with oak in missionstyle, the pictures etchings by James MontgomeryFla gg. The large ball room is in pink, the hangingsof silk and velvet. Here are held balls, large re-ceptions, theatricals, etc. A small stage makingthe latter possible. Mrs. John OFallon Delaney is president, andMiss Sophie Sloan, secretary. Text Appearing After Image: SAINT LOUIS 117 HOTELS. The Southern Hotel is the oldest first-classhotel in the city. A company was chartered in 1857 to supply thecity with hotel accommodations which should in allrespects equal those of the older and larger citiesof the United States, and a block bounded byFourth, Walnut, Fifth and Elm streets was pur-chased as a site. Work was begun in 1858, but thebuilding was not completed until in 1865, due prin-cipally to the disturbances of war. This buildingwas destroyed by fire in April 1877. The work ofrebuilding began in 1879, and in May 1881 a newfire-proof building was opened with a grand ball,one of the well remembered society CA^ents of SaintLouis. The tickets were $10.00 for gentlemen, and$5.00 for ladies, the invitations, programmes andtickets costing about $1,500.00 and the floral decor-ations $2,500.00. On entering the Southern hotel one is im-pressed with its spaciousness and homelike ele-gance.
