In addition to its regular duties, the James Whalen and her crew played a critical role in many rescue and salvage operations on Lake Superior. She was the first local vessel to be outfitted with wireless radio. This new tool allowed other ships to alert the James Whalen to boats in distress. For instance, in December 1910, the SS Dunelm ran aground at Canoe Rocks. Her whistle and distress rockets alerted the SS F.B. Squire, which used her newly-installed wireless radio to summon the James Whalen so they were able to rescue the Dunelm's stranded crew. Today, the James Whalen is permanently moored in Kaministiquia River Heritage Park. Photo by Lovelady Bros.
