A local lad, he worked in the Sawyer-Stoll lumber camps in the winter and at the mill in the summer for 2 years prior to enlisting in the army. In his winter work at Zilny's camp, he had a team of black Morgans, which were, according to John, "the best team of horses ever." They were strong and quick, and John "could handle them". John is an avid hunter and fisherman, who did guiding as a teenager. For one summer, he guided for Rutland Lodge, on Skootamatta Lake, a "great place" for bass - at least at that time! John and his wife live now in Trenton, and occasionally come to the area for a visit. From an interview with John Schwager, September 2004.
