The ship was purchased by Byrd; and after the Second Byrd Expedition, allowed the U.S. Navy to use the ship. The steam powered sailing ship was also used during World War II and was destined to be floating restaurant in the early 1960s when she sunk in the Atlantic while being towed on March 19, 1963.
