Keywords: outdoor Lot-5279-24: Allied Air Raids in Europe, May 2, 1944. Second Daylight Attack on Valenciennes. B-26 “Marauders” of the 9th USAAF pass over the smoking target area during the height of the second heavy daylight attack on the railway yards at Valenciennes, northern France, May 2, 1944. Three separate fires can be seen on the railway freight yards in the lower part of the picture while a factory building blazes on the left. Two large warehouse buildings, a car repair shop, many goods wagons and tracks and a roadhouse were also severely damaged in the assault. Dwarfing all previous records in history, a grand total of 81,000 tons of bombs were dropped by Allied bombers on Hitler’s Europe during the month of April 1944. Of these, 48,000 tons were dropped by the United States. The Strategic Air Force – the heavies established a new peak in daylight raids with 39,000 tons. The Second Tactical Air Force dropped 1,700 tons. Marauders and Havoc medium and light bombers of the 9th USAAF unloaded nearly 8,000 tons. U.S. Army Photograph. (2015/10/30).
