Thick columns of smoke rise from the harbor area of Malakal Island of the Palau group as U.S. Navy planes blast a way for landings on the islands. The Palau Islands are in the Central Pacific about 600 miles east of the Philippines. The landings were made simultaneously with U.S. General Douglas MacArthur’s attack on Morotai Island in the Molucca Islands, 300 miles south-east of the Philippines.
