An entire floor was packed with an estimated $500,000 worth of growing equipment. This pot facility was hiding in plain sight. You can see this building from all over this side of the city and across the river. It's on the top floor of the old Fownes building. The only reason police found the place was because of a power outage after a big storm. Federal Authorities however have stated “it is difficult to believe an operation of this size and magnitude could go undetected by local police” They went on to say “either the police were grossly negligent in their duties or at least some of the officers had knowledge and were a part of the organization or willfully turned a blind eye.” Police had to bring in a tractor trailer to load up all the pot growing equipment they confiscated. Some of the materials seized from the pot growing operation in Amsterdam. Half a million dollars worth of Air conditioning units, hydroponic lights, generators, and fans. Amsterdam's police chief, Greg Culick, says these guys, whoever they are, were serious business people. "This is no comparison to anything I've ever seen. They meant this to go on and on," surmised Culick. Up the freight elevator on the sixth floor, the criminals had built a growing room with advanced electrical and plumbing work to hook up an irrigation system and those lights. Police have already removed a lot of equipment, but what's left behind are a lot of grow blocks. The suspects put the marijuana plant in here with a little soil. A little irrigation and it grows. People were living up here too, as were three pit-bulls for protection. That's how this was discovered last night when the power went out. "A couple neighbors in the building called and saw some lights up there in the building. My officers went to check it out and upon checking the guy’s stories. Things weren't fitting," noted Culicik. Police took the three men there into custody. One of them possibly Ukranian. The men haven't been charged yet. And officers think one man got away through the back stairs. A car was stolen from the Stewart's down the street in the same time frame. The police chief says now the focus is following the money.
