Keywords: Old Ebbitt Grill Old F Street Location front looking northwest 1967.jpg en Looking northwest at the front entrance to the Old Ebbitt Grill located at 1427 F Street NW Washington D C United States To the left of Old Ebbitt Grill is Rhodes Tavern a historic tavern in Washington D C It was the site of the first citizens' meeting in the city and the first election and several British generals drank in the tavern during the Burning of Washington during the War of 1812 Across the street to the left of the image is the U S Treasury Building Old Ebbitt Grill was originally a restaurant which existed as part of the Ebbitt House hotel which was established in 1856 The hotel was located on the southeast corner of F Street and 14th Street in Washington D C The original hotel was razed in 1872 and a newer much larger hotel with a greatly expanded and much more luxurious dining room built The dining room was significantly renovated in 1910 Ebbitt House closed in 1925 and the restaurant's furnishings were purchased by Anders R Lofstrand Sr a local restauranteur and veteran bar owner The Old Ebbitt Grill restaurant was moved to 1427 F Street NW Lofstrand occupied all four floors of this existing building The restaurant passed into the hands of the Clyde's Restaurant Group in 1970 after a tax auction In 1977 the building was demolished to make way for the Metropolitan Square development However Old Ebbitt Grill re-established itself on the northwest corner of Metropolitan Square at 675 15th Street NW It remains in existence as of 2012 and is the oldest bar and restaurant in the city http //www loc gov/pictures/item/dc0193/ Historic American Buildings Survey Prints and Photographs Division Library of Congress 1967 PD-USGov-Interior-HABS Old Ebbitt Grill 1926 location |
