From 1946-1955 he was the first Secretary to the Inter-University Council for Higher Education Overseas and before becoming Director of the School in 1967 he was for twelve years Principal of University College of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. He retired in 1974 and died in 1975 whilst on a visit to Rhodesia to receive an honorary degree from the University.'
