One of about seven Greek temples situated at Selinus. The area of Selinunte is the largest Archaeological Site in Europe situated in South West Sicily. \nThe city was founded in the 7th Century BC by Greeks from Megara . It was a reasonably sized city spread over 2 low lying coastal hills. Judging from the number and size of the temples at the site, the city had high ideas well above it's station. In 409 Selinus was attacked and destroyed by Carthaginians. \nEarthquakes shook the remaining buildings to the ground in the middle ages and the site of Selinus was largely forgotten until it's rediscovery in the 16th Century.\nIn the Early 19th Century English archaeologists began work on the excavations. Work that is ongoing to this day.
