This is a whole plant of lesser burdock (Arctium minus) growing in a field. Burdock grows well in shaded hedgerows, and to see an isolated plant like this is relatively rare. The small purple flowers turn into brown seed balls (burrs). Each seed has a fierce hook that will catch in an animal's fur (or a person's trousers), a clinging characteristic that led to the invention of Velcro by George de Mestral. The Latin name 'Arctium' derives from the Greek arctos, a bear, a reference to the furry texture of the burrs. Other common names include common burdock, wild rhubarb, clothbur, beggar's buttons and gypsy's rhubarb.

Borage is an annual plant, which is also known as burrage, common bugloss, bee bread, bee fodder, star flower, ox's tongue, and cool tankard. The stem and leaves are covered with coarse, prickly hairs. The bright blue flowers are star shaped. The fresh plant has a salty flavor and a cucumber-like odor.\nBorage leaves have been used as a potherb and in European herbal medicine since the Middle Ages. Borage leaves and flowers were added to wine and lemon juice to make the popular English beverages claret cup and cool tankard. The leaves have been used to treat rheumatism, colds, and bronchitis, as well as to increase lactation in women.
