These are the nuts of the common / European beech tree, clustered in great numbers over the branches. It was impossible to estimate how many prospective little beech tree this one was carrying - thousands, certainly. Beech wood is short-grained, making it brittle, but it is very durable when wet. Hence its use in ship building, when oak was in short supply. Beech has some antiseptic properties.
