The Sangre de Cristo Mountains are the southernmost part of the Rocky Mountains in southern Colorado and northern New Mexico.  This mountain range is 242 miles in length and contains several peaks which are over 12,000 feet above sea level in New Mexico and over 14,000 feet in Colorado.  The highest peak is Blanca Peak in Colorado at 14,351 feet above sea level.  The name of the mountains, which means “Blood of Christ” in Spanish, refers to the reddish color observed during sunrise and sunset. The Western Kingbird (Tyrannus verticalis) is a large North American flycatcher with gray-olive upper body, gray head and a dark streak through the eye. The underparts are light turning to yellow on the lower breast and belly. The breeding habitat of the western kingbird are open areas in western North America. Kingbirds make a cup nest in a tree or shrub. The female lays three to five eggs which are incubated for 12 to 14 days. The kingbird migrates in flocks to Florida and the Pacific coast of southern Mexico and Central America. The diet of these birds is mostly insects which they catch in flight or on the ground. They also eat berries. This western kingbird was photographed at Palouse Falls State Park near Starbuck, Washington State, USA.
A New Zealand endemic bird, the Rock Wren, perched on a branch. The bird is small with olive-green plumage on its back and wings, and a pale greyish-white throat and belly. It also has a noticeable yellow patch on its sides. Its beak is short and pointed, ideal for its insectivorous diet. The bird's legs and feet are strong, adapted for hopping among rocks and alpine terrain. The background is softly blurred, with hues of green and grey, which enhances the focus on the Rock Wren, highlighting its delicate features and vibrant colours.
