Hammershus, Northern Europe's largest castle ruin on Bornholm, dates back to the late 13th century. Originally built by Archbishop Jens Grand, it played a key role in Bornholm's history. Notably, King Christian IV's daughter, Leonora Christina, and her husband were imprisoned there in 1660-61. The fortress was abandoned in 1743, and after years of decay, it was protected in 1822, preserving its historical significance.

St Botolph’s Priory in Colchester, Essex, Eastern England, was founded around 1093 and housed Augustinian canons until its dissolution in 1536. It was constructed using flint and reused Roman bricks which were locally readily available thanks to the town’s earlier occupation as a Roman settlement. The Priory was built in typical Norman style with thick circular pillars and round arches, of which this image shows part. The Priory was badly damaged in 1648 during the siege of Colchester in the Civil War.
