Alder (Alnus glutinosa) is one of the commonest trees found in wetlands. It provides food for good numbers of finches during most winters. Here, it is spring, and fresh green leaves accompany the female catkins / cones (strobili). Strobili are cones, one cone is a strobilus.

Japanese alder ( Alnus japonica ) fruits. It grows in wetlands and blooms drooping flowers in early spring, and its pinecone-shaped fruits are used for dyes and medicines.
Deciduous tree to 25m, with smooth silvery-gray bark striped with brown; trunk fluted. Leaves oval, pointed, somewhat pleated, sharply toothed, hairy on veins beneath. Catkins greenish to 5cm, with the leaves. Fruit in pendant clusters, surrounded by 3-lobed bracts; nuts small.\nFlowering Season: April-May.\nHabitat: Woods, hedgerows and scrub, occasionally pollarded, mostly in low altitudes.\nDistribution: S. Britain and Europe, north to S Sweden.\n\nThis Picture is made during a Long Weekend in the South of Belgium in June 2019.

The developing fruit or catkins of Green Alder, Alnus viridis, growing in a meadow in Carver's Gap in the Appalachians of Tennessee and North Carolina. As the fruit mature they reveal brown seeds.
