Halfmens (literal translation: Half Human) (Pachypodium namaquanum). Also called Elephant Trunk, this is one of the most popular of all large succulents from the arid Northern Cape and southern Namibia. Pachypodium namaquanum is listed as a Lower Risk (LR) and Near Threatened (NT) species according to the Southern African Plant Red Data List. When seen in the distance against the skyline, they could easily be mistaken for humans, especially in family groups, hence the name Halfmens. According to Nama folklore, a tribe from southern Namibia was driven southwards to the Richtersveld. A few paused to gaze longingly northward and the gods turned them into half-humans or halfmens with a distant view of their lost homeland. Photographed near Eksteensfonteint in the UNESCO Richtersveld Cultural and Botanical Landscape.
