This church, now housing the Monastic Communities of Jerusalem, was consecrated as a Benedictine institution in 978 by Willa, Countess of Tuscany, who wanted to commemorate her late husband Hubert. It was a major landmark in medieval Florence. From 1284-1310 the Romanesque church was rebuilt in Gothic style by architect Arnolfo di Cambio, then between 1627-1631 it was given a baroque makeover. The campanile, which is Romanesque and Gothic, was completed 1310-1330 and its construction was managed by chronicler Giovanni Villani. Legend has it that Dante, who apparently grew up near here, saw Beatrice for the first time in this church.
