Looking at the portrait of a man on the house wall at the ruins of Pompeii. The Pompeian painting Styles are four periods which are distinguished in ancient Roman mural painting. They were originally delineated and described by the German archaeologist August Mau, 1840–1909, from the excavation of wall paintings at Pompeii, which is one of the largest groups of surviving examples of Roman frescoes. Pompeii is an ancient Roman city that was buried under 4 to 6 m (13 to 20 ft) of volcanic ash and pumice in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. Today Pompeii is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Italy.

The oracle predicts the death of Admetus.\nAlcestis, in Greek legend, the beautiful daughter of Pelias, king of Iolcos. She is the heroine of the eponymous play by the dramatist Euripides ( c. 484–406 bce ). According to legend, the god Apollo helped Admetus, son of the king of Pherae, to harness a lion and a boar to a chariot in order to win Alcestis's hand.

East Doors (Gates of Paradise) by Lorenzo Ghiberti on Florence Baptistery (Battistero di San Giovanni) in Tuscany, Italy. These doors consist of 10 panels depicting scenes from the Old Testament and were commissioned in 1424. Once completed, they were described by Michelangelo as being fit to be the 'gates of paradise'. The doors displayed are now a copy of the original, with those being displayed in a local museum.
