Built in 324 A.D. at the behest of the Roman emperor Constantine on the tomb of the Apostle Paul, the Basilica was enlarged to its present form starting from 386 AD. by Emperor Theodosius I and was consecrated in 402 AD. by Pope Innocent I. This sacred place for Christianity was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1980. The Basilica of Saint Paul is one of the four ancient major basilicas of Rome, along with the basilicas of Saint John in the Lateran, Saint Peter's, and Saint Mary Major.
