The fortress sitting atop of the hillside above Assisi in Umbria is the Rocca Maggiore, the ‘Greater Fortress’. Erected as a feudal castle in 1174, it wasn’t until an uprising by the residents of Assisi in 1198 that it became a defence outpost for Assisi.
