The aurora of 11/12 May 2024 was one of the most spectacular ever seen. Here it is captured in the Mackenzie district on the South Island of New Zealand, looking straight up to what appeared to be a crown directly overhead. Beams of light radiated towards the crown. The milky way can just be seen, although it is largely hidden by the brightness of the aurora. This image forms part of a timelapse sequence. Please also see the timelapse itself and another still image selected from the timelapse as the aurora changes color and shape.

The historic geomagnetic storm of May 2024, The Northern Lights visible much further South than usual, here over Southern England\nAn immense geomagnetic storm caused auroras as far south as Florida for the first time in 21 years after the sun unleashed a wave of solar flares and at least seven coronal mass ejections at Earth.

US Space Shuttle Endeavor. Auroras are light phenomena that occur in polar regions in Earth's upper atmosphere, 100-320km (60-200mi) altitude. Auroras are caused by electrons accelerated in magnetic fields. They can change form quickly.
