Rome, Italy, June 15 -- The stunning Byzantine mosaic made to decorate the interior of the great apse of the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls (San Paolo fuori le Mura) in the Ostiense district of Rome. The mosaics depicting Christ the Redeemer surrounded by St. Paul, St. Peter, St. Luke and St. Andrew, were made during the papacy of Honorius III (1216-1227) by the artisans who had worked on the mosaics of the Basilica of Saint Mark in Venice.\nBuilt in 324 A.D. at the behest of the Roman emperor Constantine on the tomb of the Apostle Paul, the Basilica was enlarged to its present form starting from 386 AD. by Emperor Theodosius I and was consecrated in 402 AD. by Pope Innocent I. This sacred place for Christianity was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1980. The Basilica of Saint Paul is one of the four ancient major basilicas of Rome, along with the basilicas of Saint John in the Lateran, Saint Peter's, and Saint Mary Major.
