San Luis Potosi Highlands, Mexico, March 26 -- A farmer pick up Cabuches under a very hot sun in the San Luis Potosi desert in central Mexico. Cabuches are the buds of a cactus known as Red Biznaga found in the highlands of the San Luis Potosí region. In the months of March and April, when the desert is dressed in colors, the farmers make their two or three day trips to collect this natural product, used to make delicious dishes of the Mexican gastronomic tradition.

Desert is Beautyful in Summer with full of colors
There was a proliferation of wildflowers in March 2017 in northwestern Baja California after the prodigious rains of the preceding winter. The 100 km stretch of desert between El Rosario and Cataviña exploded with at least 50 species of wildflowers in such abundance as to cover entire hillsides and valleys with swaths of color. In this photo, there are flowering California encelia bushes (Encelia californica) and several cardón cacti (Pachycereus pringlei) and boojum trees (Fouquieria columnaris).

In reality, jumping cholla do not jump. The common names comes from the fact that the individual stem segments of the plant are only weakly attached. The slightest touch will detach them. This gives unfortunate hikers the idea that the plant has physically jumped out and attacked.
