The majestic main altar inside the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore (Basilica of Saint Mary Major), located between the Rione Monti (Monti district) and the Rione Esquilino (Esquiline district), in the historic heart of Rome. In the foreground the marble baldaquin made by Ferdinando Fuga (1699-1782), while on the left the magnificent apse decorated in the 13th century with mosaics made by Jacopo Torriti. Inside the Basilica, founded by Pope Sixtus III in 432 in the early Christian era and subsequently expanded over the centuries in Romanesque and Baroque style, there is the famous Pauline Chapel and the tomb of Gian Lorenzo Bernini. According to tradition the ceiling of the Basilica was rebuilt in 1443 with the first gold arrived from the Peru and donated to the Roman Church by the King Philip IV of Spain. A view of the stunning frescoes inside de apse of the Duomo of Spoleto, a medieval town in the Umbria region, central Italy. The frescoes, depicting the Stories of the Virgin, were painted by Filippo Lippi between 1467 and 1469. The Duomo, or Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta (Cathedral of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary), was built starting from 1067 in Romanesque and Lombard style and consecrated in 1198. The stunning Pauline Chapel inside the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore (Basilica of Saint Mary Major), located between the Rione Monti (Monti district) and the Rione Esquilino (Esquiline district), in the historic heart of Rome. Built between 1608 and 1615 at the behest of Pope Paul V, this chapel is decorated with paintings and sculptures by many artists, including Pietro Bernini and Guido Reni. In the center, above the altar, an Eastern Roman-style painting of the Virgin Mary much revered by the citizens of Rome and dated between the 12th and 13th centuries.
