This is a proper pigeon, not a member of the feral gangster mobs that terrorise London's streets. Wood pigeons (Columba palumbus) are seldom seen in large groups, and their gentle cooing carries with it the essence of English country houses situated in large grounds with spreading cedar trees.

The Mourning Dove (Zenaida macroura) is one of the most widely distributed and abundant of all the birds of North America. It is also a prolific breeder. One pair can raise up to six broods of two chicks each in a single year. The bird is a strong flier with the wings making an unusual whistling sound. Mourning doves are a muted light grey and brown. The males and females look alike and are generally monogamous. Their diet consists almost exclusively of seeds. This mourning dove was photographed perched on a branch at Las Cruces, New Mexico, USA.
