Originally though to have been constructed by prehistoric the Adena culture, scholars now think it was built by the Fort Ancient culture (1000-1650 CE), an Ohio Valley-based, mound-building society.  The Fort Ancient culture was influenced by the contemporary Mississippian culture society based along the mid-Mississippi River valley and extending as far north as the Great Lakes area.
