Ouidah / Whydah / Ajuda, Atlantique Department, Benin: boys play on Maro Square (France Avenue), near their school and the Central Mosque with its Afro-Brazilian architecture, completed in 1818, built by Senegalese and Malian immigrants. Islam is one of Benin ’s major religions, particularly prevalent in the northern regions. Approximately 30% of the population adheres to Islam, with the majority being Sunni Muslims, influenced by the Maliki school of thought. Islam was introduced to Benin through trans-Saharan trade routes and further spread by the migration of Hausa, Fulani, and Songhai ethnic groups. Today, the religion is deeply integrated into the cultural and social fabric of northern Benin, where mosques and Islamic educational institutions play an important role in community life.
