The common names of strelitzia reginae include crane flower and bird of paradise. It got such names for its exotic flowers that look like the head of a crane.

Kigalia, Rwanda: colorful bird of paradise flower / crane flower (Strelitzia reginae), an evergreen, perennial, herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 80 to 200 centimeters, it forms clump-like stands with its branched rhizomes. The inflorescence is partially covered by a beak-shaped, bract (the so-called spathe), which usually has red edges. Named by Joseph Banks in honour of the Duchess of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Queen Charlotte, wife of George III, with the specific epithet reginae.

Kigalia, Rwanda: colorful bird of paradise flower / crane flower (Strelitzia reginae) stands out against a green foliage background. Each flower head is an inflorescence composed of four to six flowers that emerge from a stiff, greenish-pink, beak-like bract. The flower comprises six showy parts: three upright orange outer parts and three blue inner parts. The plant is endemic to subtropical South Africa.
