Blackeye Goby, Rhinogobiops nicholsii, Pacific Coast of California. Gobiidae.
Whitebarred Goby Amblygobius phalaena occurs in the tropical Pacific Ocean from the Philippines to the Society Islands, north to Ryukyu Islands, south to southern Australia (including Lord Howe Island) and Rapa Island and throughout Micronesia in a depth range from 2-52m, but usually not deeper than 20m, max. length 15cm. \nThe monogamous species lives solitary or in pairs, feeding by sifting mouthfuls of sand and expelling it through the gills, to capture small invertebrates, organic matter, and large quantities of algae. \nAdults inhabit coastal reefs and lagoons on sand and rubble margins of algal reefs and sometimes near seagrass beds. \nLembeh Strait, Indonesia,\n1°27'33.36 N 125°13'52.734 E at 2m depth

Y-Bar Shrimp Goby Cryptocentrus fasciatus occurs in the tropical Indo-West Pacific from East Africa to Melanesia and the Great Barrier Reef in a depth range from 5 to 20m, max. length 14cm. There are different color variations, a yellow-brown one (like this specimen), pale greyish or blackish variations. \nThe species is found on sand near patch reefs, usually in burrows with alpheid shrimps. \nTwo individuals sometimes share a burrow, and these may be of different color. \nThis specimen was encountered in the Lembeh Strait, Indonesia \nThe five broad brown Y-shaped bars that gave the species its common name are not clearly visible here.\n1°28'47.196 N 125°14'12.42 E at 5m depth

Weedy Cardinalfish Foa fo occurs in the tropical Indo-Pacific from East Africa and the Red Sea to French Polynesia, north to Japan and south to Australia in a depth range from 0 to 82m, usually not deeper than 15m, max. standard length 3.5cm. The species practice distinct pairing during courtship and spawning. Weedy Cardinalfish are mouthbroodes. The males are responsible for incubating the eggs in their mouths until they hatch. This paternal care strategy is common among cardinalfish. Mouthbrooding involves a considerable investment from the adult, as the brooder is typically unable to feed, or at least is severely constrained. Male care, the predominant parental care type in fish, is theorized to be correlated with external fertilization, pair-spawning and paternity confidence. \nThis specimen might take care to 200 eggs or even more.\nLembeh Strait, Indonesia \n1°29'33.414 N 125°15'40.446 E at 11m depth
