Rome, Italy, October 19 -- An evening view of some tourists in front of the majestic Roman Pantheon, in the historic and imperial heart of the Eternal City. Built in 27 BC by the Consul Marco Vispanio Agrippa for the emperor Augustus and dedicated to all the Roman divinities, the majestic Pantheon is one of the best preserved Roman structures in the world. Currently owned by the Italian state, this Roman temple preserves the remains of some Italian royalty and the Renaissance painter Raphael. In 1980 the historic center of Rome was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco. Image in high definition format.

Vestiges of the best of Roman architecture in ruins in their famous capital - once considered the centre of the whole civilised world. In the foreground, are the ruins of the Temple of Saturn. Dating back to 497 BC and 42 BC the ruins represent the third incarnation of the temple in 283 AD after fire destroyed the earlier temple. The gold and silver reserves of the Republic of Rome were stored in the Aerarium (Treasury) in this temple. In the far background, the ruins of the Colosseum can be seen.
