Python, in Greek mythology, a huge serpent that was killed by the god Apollo at Delphi either because it would not let him found his oracle, being accustomed itself to giving oracles, or because it had persecuted Apollo's mother, Leto, during her pregnancy.\n\nThe fresco shows the Omphalos stone covered with a net and the Python wrapped around it. A priestess stands at left with a sacrificial bull.\n\nA detail from a sacrificial scene shows a bull being brought to the omphalos - Made up of a stone and a snake it represents the navel of the world - Apollo plays the zither.\n\nThe ancient Greeks also used omphalos to refer to a sacred, rounded stone in the Temple of Apollo at Delphi that was supposed to mark the center of the earth.

Looking at ancient wall painting at the Tempel of Isis in the city of Pompeii. When the Temple of Isis was discovered by excavators its decoration and furnishings were almost intact, thereby contributing decisively to introduce Pompeii to the world. Pompeii is an ancient Roman city that was buried under 4 to 6 m (13 to 20 ft) of volcanic ash and pumice in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. Today Pompeii is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Italy.

Ancient Greek fresco of woman. Remains of the culture of ancient civilization in Greece. Beautiful antique wall painting, old Greek art. Cracked mural close-up.
Fresco showing winged creature; probably a griffin. The Pompeians used the griffin in their murals, but this mythical creature goes back thousands of years, to India, Assyria and Persia. The creature is basically the combination of an eagle and a lion. The head and front of the body — including the front legs and wings — are represented by an eagle. In addition, the eagle head features long ears that are sometimes feathered. The rest of the body belongs to a lion. Altogether, the creature symbolizes strength and wisdom. Because the griffin traditionally guards treasure, he also symbolizes vengeance.
