$British equipment throughout the war years ecompassed a wide range of bags, holsters, straps, boots, and countless small accessories that tried to make a soldier's life as easy as possible, and his fight one he felt capable of winning. \n\nFor pilots and men of the Royal Air Force, the protection they needed first and foremost was from the elements; climbing to altitudes of up to 34,000 feet in an unpressurised cabin meant they needed a helmet that could keep them warm, and comfortably house a headset for his radio equipment, goggles, and a breathing mask and apparatus for his oxygen feed. \n\nThick leather gloves were necessary to keep the hands warm and responsive, dexterity in the sky could make all the difference between life and death.\n\nBefore synthetic materials (and later in ww2 heated overalls), the best protection pilots had against the cold was their famous 'Irvin' Flying Jackets. Made of thick leather with a heavy pile lining, these became a post war fashion icon due to their hardiness, utility, and ageless appearance.$
