Bryce Canyon National Park is a collection of natural amphitheaters along the eastern side of the Paunsaugunt Plateau. Its rim at varies from 8,000 to 9,000 feet. The Bryce Amphitheater is 12 miles long, 3 miles wide and 800 feet deep. The Paiute Indians believed that the hoodoos (pinnacles) were people whom the gods turned to stone. The area was named after Ebenezer Bryce, who was sent here by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He settled in this area in 1874. Bryce Canyon National Park, a sprawling reserve in southern Utah, is know for crimson-colored hoodos, which are spire-shaped rock formations. Despite the name, Bryce Canyon is not a canyon, but a collection of giant natural amphitheaters.

The Great Plains meet the Rocky Mountains in Wyoming. The state is a great plateau broken by a number of important mountain ranges. In the northwest are the Absaroka, the Owl Creek, Wyoming, Gros Ventre, Wind River and the Teton ranges. In the north central are the Big Horns; in the northeast, the Black Hills; and in the southern portion of Wyoming, the Laramie, Medicine Bow and Sierra Madre ranges.
