They’re obvious here because the hawk was walking. Note the bare lower leg. The rough-legged hawk, in contrast, is feathered all the way to the toes. Most owls also have fully feathered legs. The bushier a bird of prey’s leg feathers, the more powerful it seems. Female redtails can be distinguished from males by their larger size. Red Shouldered Hawk on a perch

The red-tailed buzzard or red-tailed buzzard[2] (Buteo jamaicensis), also known as the mountain hawk, red-tailed hawk or red-tailed hawk (in the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, guaraguao or warawao), is a species of bird. raptor of the family Accipitridae, widely distributed from Alaska to the Antilles. It is one of the largest falcons of the Buteo genus, reaching 45 to 65 cm and up to 1.6 kg in weight. Variable color depending on the subspecies. It lives in a wide range of habitats and altitudes such as deserts, grasslands, forests and even urban areas. It is included in Appendix II of CITES. On the IUCN Red List it is considered to be of least concern (LC). It is one of the most abundant birds of prey and most used in falconry in North America.
