The sanctuary of Notre-Dame-des-Anges of the Massif des Maures consists of a chapel and a small cloistered convent, located in the Massif des Maures above the small town of Pignans in the Var.\n\nIt is located 780 meters above sea level between Cogolin and Collobrières to the south and Gonfaron to the north. Just behind the chapel stands a radio and television relay antenna.\n\nHistorical\nAccording to legend, the Notre-Dame-des-Anges chapel, south of Pignans, was founded in 517 by Thierry I, son of Clovis, in memory of a victory over the Visigoths, in the village of Les Pins (former name of Pignans ).\n\nThe pilgrimage is constant (with an interruption in the tenth century with the invasion of the Saracens1).\n\nLater the sanctuary was entrusted to the canons of Saint Augustine. They were driven out during the French Revolution and the sanctuary sold as national property. The chapel was rebuilt in 1844 and the priory in 1900, using the old walls.\n\nThe chapel has one nave with a Virgin of walnut, object of the pilgrimage. The priory with its small cloister was restored in the 19th century. Among his most surprising ex-votos, that of the explorer Jules Gérard, in the form of a crocodile, is suspended from the ceiling2.\n\nAccording to belief, the pilgrimage to Notre-Dame-des-Anges cures laziness. This chapel and its sanctuary have been home to a small community of Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate since 2001.\n\nThe name is used for the complementary geographical name Notre-Dame-des-Anges.
