The Capitoline Hill (Latin: Collis Capitolinus pronounced, between the Forum and the Campus Martius, is one of the seven hills of Rome. By the 16th century, Capitolinus had become Campidoglio in the Roman dialect. The English word capitol derives from Capitoline. The Capitoline contains few ancient ground-level ruins, as they are almost entirely covered up by Medieval and Renaissance palaces (now housing the Capitoline Museums) that surround a piazza, a significant urban plan designed by Michelangelo.

Rome, Italy, July 22 -- A stunning front view of the National Monument of the Altare della Patria in Piazza Venezia, considered the historic heart of Rome, illuminated by a gentle summer sunset light in an image taken along Via del Corso. The Altare della Patria, or Vittoriano, was built in 1885 in neoclassical style in honor of the first King of Italy, Vittorio Emanuele II, along the north side of the Campidoglio (Capitoline Hill) and near the Roman Forum. Inside the monument is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, a War Memorial dedicated to all the Italian soldiers who died in the war. The Altare della Patria is the scene of all Italian national official civic celebrations, in particular the Republic Day on June 2 and the Liberation Day on April 25. In 1980 the historic center of Rome was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco. Image in high definition format.
