The name comes from the ancient Greek word nekropolis, which literally means “city of the dead”.\n\nThe Giza Complex was once near the ancient Egyptian capital of Memphis, and the Giza plateau is where a number of pharaohs, queens, and nobles of the Fourth Dynasty of ancient Egypt were buried. \n\nAll three of Giza's pyramids and their elaborate burial complexes were built from roughly 2550 to 2490 B.C. A mythical creature with the head of a human and the body of a lion, the The Great Sphinx of Giza is a limestone statue facing directly from west to east. Found on the Giza Plateau on the west bank of the Nile in Giza, Egypt, the face of the Sphinx is thought to represent Pharaoh Khafre. The original shape of the Sphinx was cut from bedrock and has since been restored with layers of limestone blocks. Measuring 73 m long from paw to tail, and 20 m high from the base to the top of the head. The Sphinx is the oldest known monumental sculpture in Egypt and one of the most recognizable statues in the world. The archaeological evidence suggests that it was created by ancient Egyptians of the Old Kingdom during the reign of Khafre (c. 2558–2532 BC)
