Shachihoko are mythical half dragon half fish sea creatures that are said to bring rain. They were typically placed on the roofs of castles and the homes of samurai to protect them from fire. Kumamoto Castle, built by Kato Kiyomasa, is located in Kumamoto City, Kumamoto Prefecture. It sustained serious damage in the 2016 earthquake, but the castle tower has been fully restored. Other facilities within the castle are also steadily being restored.
