Saint King Louis 9th created Sainte Chapelle in 1248 to house Christian relics, including Christ's Crown of Thorns. The complex of Scaliger Tombs (Italian: Arche scaligere) is one of the most outstanding examples of Gothic art. The Church of the Redeemer is located in the center of Jerusalem's Old City, in the Muristan, directly south of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. The last section of the Via Dolorosa, which ends at the neighboring Church of the Holy Sepulchre, runs along the north side of the Church of the Redeemer. Suq el-Lahhanin runs to the east, while the Provost's Office and the Martin Luther School are adjacent to the south. To the west of the church is Muristan Street (formerly Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm Street), which is unusually wide for the Old City, and the Muristan Bazaar.
