An autumn fog does not disguise the power of this splendid mature stag, roaring his defiance at opponents who are hidden, but can be heard, in the misty landscape. In the foreground is a female with a young fawn, with the female (hind) being the object of the stag's attention. This is the time of year when fawns become forcibly detached from their mothers. Stags grow one spike (tine) on their antlers for every year. A stag becomes mature (royal) when it has six tines on each antler. This fine fellow has eleven tines on each antler for a total of 22. He is a formidable foe for any would-be opponent.

Young red deer stag standing in grassland. Young red deer stags that are newly adult find themselves at a bit of a loss during the rut. They are too young to compete with older adults for females; and too old to join bachelor herds, where the antlers of younger males are only just developing. In a couple of years his body mass will be greater and his antlers will have grown another couple of tines. Then he will be ready to give an account of himself.

A rutting red deer stag is always on the alert for new females approaching 'his' patch. When he sees one he will let out a roar and rush towards them, encouraging them to join his harem. This master stag is on full alert. This photo is taken early on the first cold autumn morning of 2014, where a frost sits on the ground and fog surround the lake. This is a perfect setting for rutting stags in southern England in early October.
