The beautiful facade of the Cathedral or Duomo of Santa Maria Assunta in the historic heart of Pesaro, a town on the Adriatic coast of Italy in the Marche region. Built in the 12th century, the Cathedral of Pesaro stands on a previous temple from the Peleo-Christian era of which some mosaics are preserved. The Romanesque-Gothic style facade is unfinished and has a simple ogival portal. Known as the City of Music and the City of the Bicycle, Pesaro was founded by the Piceni people during the Iron Age, to develop as an important center on the Adriatic Sea under the rule of Ancient Rome and later in the Middle Ages. Pesaro is known and loved in the world of music and opera for being the birthplace of the composer Gioachino Rossini (1792-1868), author of works such as The Barber of Seville, Guillaume Tell and La Gazza Ladra. The Abbey Church of San Salvatore in the heart of the medieval town of Foligno in Umbria, central Italy. The origins of this church date back to 970 AD but only starting from 1183 did it become an important abbey church of the Benedictine friars. Founded since pre-Roman times by the Umbrian people, Foligno was dominated by the Lombards and later by the Duchy of Spoleto. In the Middle Ages this city strategically placed between Spoleto and Perugia was an important trading center along the ancient Via Flaminia. The Umbria region, considered the green lung of Italy for its wooded mountains, is characterized by a perfect integration between nature and the presence of man, in a context of environmental sustainability and healthy life. In addition to its immense artistic and historical heritage, Umbria is famous for its food and wine production and for the high quality of the olive oil produced in these lands.
