The citadel was founded by the Urartian Kingdom in the begining of eighth century B.C. It was named as Ziata Castellum during the Roman and Byzantine Empires, Hisn Ziyad by the Arabs. The castle was conquered by Cubuk Bey, one of the chieftains of Turcoman tribes in 1234. Yavuz Sultan Selim, the Ottoman Sultan, conquered the fortress in 1516. The fortification walls and all of the architectural remains are from the medieval era.
