Built in the early 16th century by king Manuel I, the church is notable for its richly detailed stonework, especially around its main portal and windows, featuring intricate floral and maritime motifs typical of Manueline design - partly inspired by the Convent of Jesus in Setúbal and the Old Cathedral of Elvas. Inside, it boasts a spacious nave with elegant ribbed vaulting and a striking Baroque altar. Olivença is a historically contested town located east of the Guadiana river. It has been the subject of a long-standing territorial dispute between Spain and Portugal since the early 19th century.
