A male Dark-eyed Junco (Junco hymenalis) in San Bernardino County of southern California. This species has a very complex taxonomy and was once consigned to six separate species depending on color and location, but the forms interbreed extensively.  There are considered to be the Slate-colored, White-winged, Oregon, Pink-sided, Gray-headed, Red-backed, and Guadalupe Groups. The various groups are permanent residents across southern Canada and most of the United States.  They breed as far north as Alaska and northern Canada and winter to northern Mexico.
