Standing atop a 40-foot marble pylon is this gilded sculpture group representing the victorious Columbia Triumphant (the United States.) She is in a seashell-shaped chariot pulled by three hippocampi, mythical figures with the front half of a horse and the rear half of a fish. Columiba’s left hand holds aloft a sprig of laurel leaves, symbolizing victory. Her right hand holds a fasces, a roman symbol representing government power. A shield is strapped to her back. The height of the group is fourteen feet. \n\nAs with all the sculptural work on this monument, the artist was Attilio Piccerilli (1866-1945.) For his figure of Columbia, as well as two other figures for this monument, his model was Audrey Munson. \n\nMunson posed for more than a dozen important statues, sculptures, and friezes, most of which still stand to this day across Manhattan and Brooklyn. She is now often called “America’s First Supermodel.”

London, England - January 18, 2020: the Albert Memorial, Kensington Gardens, was completed in 1872 and faces the Royal Albert Hall. Designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott in an elaborate gothic style, it honours Queen Victoria's husband, Prince Albert, who died in 1861 of typhoid, aged 42. In this photograph we see a detail of the monument: a stone canopy (above a gilded sculpture of Prince Albert, not seen here); below is a stone frieze known as the Frieze of Parnassus depicting famous composers, writers, artists, and architects. Surrounding the monument at each corner are sculptures representing Europe (seen in this photograph), America, Africa, and Asia. There are also sculptures depicting agriculture, engineering, manufacture, and commerce, as well as angels, among others.
