Blooming Dwarf cornel in a lush Finnish forest in Valtavaara during summertime
Pretty little flowers growing in the mountains.
Cornus kousa, commonly called Japanese dogwood, Kousa, and Kousa dogwood, is native to East Asia and is a small, deciduous flowering tree, with bloom occurring from late spring to early summer (May-June). Kousa dogwood “flowers” are four petal-like white bracts which surround the center cluster of yellowish-green, true flowers. Flowers are followed by berry-like fruits which mature to a pinkish red in summer.

Red osier dogwood suffers from multiple Latin names, such as (Cornus sericea), (C. stolonifera) and (Swida sericea). As is more usual, it has a number of common names too: red osier cornel, red willow, redstem dogwood, redtwig dogwood, red-rood, American dogwood,(1) creek dogwood, and western dogwood for example. It is a flowering bush or tree, and the four-petalled cross-shaped flowers are white. Because of its liking for damp soil, red osier dogwood can be planted to stabilise river banks; which explains why this particular specimen is growing on the banks of the River Wandle in Surrey, England.

Cornus alba, the red-barked, white or Siberian dogwood, is a species of flowering plant in the family Cornaceae, native to Siberia, northern China and Korea. It is a large deciduous surculose (suckering) shrub that can be grown as a small tree. As a popular ornamental used in landscaping its notable features include the red stems in fall (autumn) through late winter, bright winter bark; and the variegated foliage in some cultivars, such as C. alba 'Elegantissima'. C. alba can grow to 3 m high, but variegated forms are less vigorous. For the brightest winter bark, young shoots are encouraged by cutting to the ground some older stems at the end of the winter, before leaves are open. The oval fruits are white, sometimes tinted blue.\n\nThe Bush was photographed in a Park in Almere (the Netherlands) in 2024.

Saururus chinensis, commonly called Asian lizard’s tail, has attractive, green foliage with white splotches on the leaves at the top of the plant. It is native to wetlands, including water gardens, meadows, marshes, ditches, swampy forested areas, fields and roadsides in East Asia. Minute, spicily fragrant, white to yellowish-white flowers bloom in early to mid-summer (June-August). Each flower spike resembles the tail of a lizard, hence the common name.
