It states that on 19 December 1679 that the 'Rose Alley Ambuscade' happened in which poet John Dryden was assaulted by masked men probably at the behest of John Wilmot, second Earl of Rochester, and the Duchess of Portsmouth, Charles II's mistress, because of an anonymous Essay on Satire, which mocked the monarch, the earl and the duchesses of Cleveland and Portsmouth. The piece was thought to have been written by Dryden but was in fact written by someone else.
